Privacy Policy
Last Updated: December 15, 2025
This Privacy Policy explains how Olfacto ("we", "us", or "our") uses the personal data we collect from you when you use our website.
1. What data do we collect?
Unlike many other sites, we do not hoard your data. We collect only what is strictly necessary to keep the site running and to fund our content through affiliate partnerships.
We collect the following data:
- Usage Data (Anonymized): Pages visited, time spent on page, and referring websites.
- Technical Data: Browser type, device type (mobile/desktop), and operating system.
- Geolocation Data (Coarse): We detect your approximate location (country level only) using the X-Vercel-IP-Country header. This is used solely to display the correct affiliate links for your region (e.g., US vs. EU retailers) and is not stored as a persistent profile.
2. How do we collect your data?
You provide most of the data we collect directly when you view our website. We collect data and process data when you:
- Use or view our website via your browser’s cookies.
- Click on an outbound link to one of our retail partners (Awin or Amazon).
We use the following specific third-party processors:
- Vercel Analytics: This service collects anonymized visitor data. It does not use cookies and does not store personally identifiable information (PII).
- Google Analytics: We use Google Analytics to understand site traffic. We have enabled IP anonymization, meaning your IP address is masked before being stored by Google.
- Affiliate Networks: When you click a "Buy" button, tracking parameters are passed to our partners (Awin, Amazon) to attribute the sale.
3. How will we use your data?
We collect your data so that we can:
- Analyze website performance (e.g., "Which perfume articles are most popular?").
- Route you to the correct retailer based on your country (e.g., sending US visitors to Sephora US and Romanian visitors to Notino).
- Attribute sales to earn commissions, which keep Olfacto ad-free.
4. Affiliate Disclosure & Tracking
We participate in affiliate marketing programs. This means we may get paid commissions on products purchased through our links.
- Awin: We use Awin to manage relationships with retailers like Sephora, LookFantastic, and Liberty London. Awin may use cookies or device fingerprinting to track that you clicked a link from Olfacto. For more information, please review Awin’s Privacy Policy.
- Amazon Associates: As an Amazon Associate, Olfacto earns from qualifying purchases. Amazon requires us to state that they may track your purchase history after clicking our link to calculate our commission.
5. How do we store your data?
- Analytics Data: Stored securely by our processors (Google and Vercel) on their servers.
- Retention: We rely on standard retention periods set by Google Analytics (typically 2-14 months) before user-level data is automatically deleted.
6. What are your data protection rights?
Under GDPR, you are entitled to the following:
- The right to access: You can ask us for copies of your personal data.
- The right to rectification: You can ask us to correct information you believe is inaccurate.
- The right to erasure: You can ask us to erase your personal data ("Right to be Forgotten").
- The right to restrict processing: You can object to our processing of your data.
To exercise these rights, please contact us at the email listed below.
7. Cookies
Cookies are text files placed on your computer to collect standard Internet log information and visitor behavior information.
How do we use cookies?
- Functionality: We may use local storage to remember if you have accepted our Cookie Banner.
- Analytics: Google Analytics sets cookies to distinguish unique users.
- Affiliate: When you click an outbound link, a cookie is often set by the retailer (not us directly) to track the sale window (usually 30 days).
How to manage cookies: You can set your browser not to accept cookies. However, blocking all cookies may prevent affiliate tracking from working, which hurts our ability to create free content.
8. Privacy policies of other websites
The Olfacto website contains links to other websites (retailers, brands). Our privacy policy applies only to our website. If you click on a link to another website, you should read their privacy policy.
9. Changes to our privacy policy
Olfacto keeps its privacy policy under regular review and places any updates on this web page.
